Influence of cardiac sympathetic and vagal nerve stimulation on the relation between left ventricular diastolic pressure and myocardial segment length.

چکیده
THAT THE catechol amines or cardiac sympathetic nerve stimulation will increase the vigor of ventricular contraction has been established." Further, it is now known that the ventricle will contract more forcefully from any given filling pressure under these influences." The early studies of Anrep and other more recent studies" indicate that a changed myocardial extensibility cannot, of itself, account for the increased ventricular contraction. However, whether or not the augmented stroke work is produced solely by a more forceful contraction from a given diastolic ventricular fiber length, or whether changes in the relation between ventricular diastolic pressure and fiber length contribute to the observed augmentation, has not been established. The development of a technic which makes it possible to examine the relation between left ventricular diastolic pressure and the length of a selected segment of ventricular myocardium facilitated a study of this problem. Also the effect of vagal efferent stimulation on the relation between left ventricular diastolic pressure and segment length was investigated. A preliminary report of this work has appeared. Methods The changes in length of a segment of left ventricular myocardium were measured simultaneously with ventricular pressure during diastole. The measurements were made over a wide l'ange of pressures so that curves relating left ventricular diastolie pressure and myocardial segment length could be plotted (pressure-length curves). This relation was examined before and during sympathetic or parasympathetic stimulation, both at a

The effects of reduced cardiac sympathetic tone on myocardial function.
Stimuli mediated over cardiac sympathetic nerves increase the work output of the heart (1) and the contractility of the myocardium (2). Such stimuli increase ventricular performance so that more external work is produced at a lower filling pressure (3). Stimuli mediated over the vagus nerves appear to decrease ventricular performance (4). Recent work indicates that sympathetic stimulation incre...
متن کاملVagal nerve stimulation markedly improves long-term survival after chronic heart failure in rats.
BACKGROUND Diminished cardiac vagal activity and higher heart rate predict a high mortality rate of chronic heart failure (CHF) after myocardial infarction. We investigated the effects of chronic electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve on cardiac remodeling and long-term survival in an animal model of CHF after large myocardial infarction. METHODS AND RESULTS Two weeks after the ligation of...
متن کاملVagal cardiopulmonary reflexes after left ventricular deafferentation.
BACKGROUND Cardiac transplantation and chronic myocardial infarction interrupt vagal afferent nerve fibers, which originate mainly from the ventricles. Marked abnormalities of reflexes mediated by cardiopulmonary receptors with vagal afferent fibers have been demonstrated after both cardiac transplantation and chronic myocardial infarction. The relation between these reflex abnormalities and ve...
متن کاملEffect of enhanced contractility on the left ventricular response to vagus nerve stimulation in dogs.
In the canine isovolumetric left ventricle preparation, stimuli were applied to the efferent end of a transected cervical vagus nerve. The changes in left ventricular systolic pressure in response to vagal stimulation were compared under control conditions and when ventricular contractility was enhanced by various kinds of inotropic stimulation—left stellate ganglion stimulation, paired pacing,...
متن کاملDiastolic left ventricular functional indices: Comparison between gated myocardial perfusion SPECT and echocardiography
Introduction: Many patients have only diastolic dysfunction without any abnormality in systolic function. We compared cardiac diastolic parameters obtained by gated myocardial perfusion SPECT (Gated SPECT) with those evaluated by echocardiography. Methods: Forty-nine patients (aged 37-85 years, 19 males and 30 women) underwent Gated SPECT and echocardiogr...
